Example: blended learning solution
Challenge
To design and deliver a training solution for an NHS organisation to meet the requirements of PMETB whilst balancing the requirements of individuals working in a busy and diverse environment with diverse patient schedules.
Solution
Providing a training solution to meet the diverse needs, workloads and availability of professionals was going to be challenging. On the surface it was simply to provide a 'Supervising Trainees' course for a large number of educational supervisors. Historically, this was provided with up to 5 days classroom training which removed doctors and staff from patient opportunity time considerably.
We needed to reduce this out time and ensure that the doctors/staff received the same high levels of training to satisfy mandatory requirements.
To do this we offered a blended learning solution which brought together knowledge based elearning courses linked to in-classroom skills workshops all fully reportable for PMETB.
- An elearning programme encompassing varying elements including: Appraisals for junior doctors, Educational supervision, Trainees in difficulty, Workplace based assessment and Career development
- Learners undertake the elearning element and are also required to attend a workshop to practice skills before they are shown as completing the learning for their records
- Learners study online at their own pace and time to suit
Result
Feedback from users has been exceptionally positive with 98% saying they would recommend the course to their colleagues. The Royal College of Physicians has awarded 16 CPD points for the online component and there are clear benefits realised in terms of less in-classroom training resulting in increased patient opportunity time.
Following this success, further courses have already been developed and added to the suite including: Faculty development, WPBA for assessors, SAS doctors, Leader and appraisals within revalidation.
“The course met every stage of our needs. It provided a blended learning solution which benefitted not only the educational supervisors, but the Trust and PCT as well.”
